A New Year, New You Maybe Not!
A New Year, New You Maybe Not! I find the concept of making resolutions on New Yearâs Eve fascinating. The frenzy with which people attend to resolutions during the end of the year intrigues me. The burst of energetic resolve, the elaborate goal-writing and the endless conversations to identify the ârightâ goals seem to pop up in conversations, essays and blogs. Each year I listen, read and ponder: âWhat is so special about setting goals at the end of the year?â âWhy does it consume our attention so enthusiastically?â âIs there that magical list which when followed will ceremoniously anoint your goal as worthy of action?â You would think that after reading all that has been written and continues to be discussed about year-end resolutions and goal-setting, I would be less intrigued or would have been equally evangelical about making a few resolutions of my own. The opposite is true. I continue to listen, read and ponder because I am unable to mirror the zeal and capture similar enthusiasm to actually come up with a New Year resolution, much less act on it. The story behind a tradition or a practice always captivates me and I went looking for the story behind making New Year Resolutions. There are many historical references, and I picked the story in a recent Washington Post article, âWhy do we make New Year resolutions?â by Howard Bennett to think about this practice this year with more intention than I have given it in previous years. The month of January, according to this story is named after Janus, a two-faced Roman God, facing backwards and forwards. January then does seem like a perfect time to make resolutions for the rest of the year, wouldnât it? As you look backwards at your successes and failures, what behaviors of ingenuity, resiliency and ownership have remained steadfast in your life? How might you use these practices to create forward-looking pathways today? I believe the goal in of itself matters little. For a goal to create joy, productivity and fulfillment, most of us might need to dig deeper to flush out hidden energy that will redirect our lives more fully, with insight and awareness. It is the sweet intersection of what is gone before and what is yet to come, when explored fully, that creates the synergy for becoming unstuck. So, here is an exercise that might support the actions you take to set your resolution into motion: Identify three stories each from your life that gave you the deepest satisfaction AND the deepest embarrassment. Remember the examples of ingenuity, resiliency and ownership that showed up in ALL your stories. With intention, bring to awareness this ownership to inform your daily actions. See your goal evolve effortlessly and seamlessly into all aspects of your life. My unsubstantiated theory is that whatever your goal, the chances that you will meet it is higher when you carry with you a deep awareness and recognition of the thread that connects your past to what is current and potentially creates the fabric to your future. I also learned that Janus is the Guardian of arches, gates and doors. Now, isnât that a great visual? A sentinel standing guard who in a momentâs notice can either sternly command you to stop and close the door shut or can usher you in with pomp and circumstance. Of course, the nicer choice is being ushered in with pomp and circumstance. What might help persuade this âguardianâ to be gentle and empowering towards attaining your goal? You are your best guardian because no one else has your interests more in mind than you. The issue, I believe, lies in the scripts that have become dear to us and take us to predictable and mostly unproductive outcomes. It is this attachment to a way of doing things or thinking a certain way or confirming our self-doubts that stops resolutions from going that extra mile. Again, I believe the goal in of itself matters little. What is fruitful, perhaps, is freeing oneself of the various deals or contracts we make with ourselves on an unconscious level so that we can truly engage in magical thinking. Might this thinking then, lead to a sustainable transformation, rather than a mere checking off a goal from a well-intentioned list? So, here is an exercise that might help replace the predictable, fearful and rigid thinking that could close that gate or door on you: Understand clearly how discrepancies between thought and action show up on a regular basis and why. How do these distractions diminish your goal? And, why does it matter to you? Shrink the anxiety implicit in goal-setting by recognizing the part in your goal that is other-focused and helpful to others. This is hard work because it forces you to have greater clarity around your goal in a way that it captivates you and others, thereby becoming truly inspiring in thought and action. Imagine the âguardianâ with some humor â" dress her up fancily or have her do a cartwheel each time she looks sternly at you or give her a piece of your mind! Remember, she does need your permission to mess with your heart and head. Why give her that ownership? See your goal evolve effortlessly and seamlessly into all aspects of your life. Seems like I have to first work on some of the insights I am sharing with you here before I can buy into making a resolution specifically on New Yearâs Eve! For now, I will continue to work on goals as they come into my life. What helps you keep your New Year resolutions?

Resume Summary with No Experience - Examples for Students and Fresh Graduates - Career Sidekick
Resume Summary with No Experience - Examples for Students and Fresh Graduates - Career Sidekick Resume Summary with No Experience Examples for Students and Fresh Graduates Recent Grads Resume/CV / https://www.edenscott.com/blog If youre looking for how to write a summary for your resume with no work experience, youve come to the right place.Im going to walk you through exactly what to do, and then well look at resume summary examples for entry-level job seekers, students and fresh graduates.Lets get startedHow to Write a Summary For Your Resume With No Experience:Okay, first- a summary is different than an objective. Usually resume objectives are useless because they dont share anything the hiring manager doesnt already know (such as my goal is to obtain a position in the ___ industry). So what were doing here is better and will help your resume stand out from people who simply put an objective. If youre not sure what a resume summary actually is, check out this article on 10 resume summary examples. But we still have the original problem: What do you put? You dont have any work experience, so what goes on your summary?1. Put academic accomplishments and leadershipWhat did you s tudy? Did you just graduate with a degree? Mention that.If you took a leadership role in your class projects, or clubs/groups at your school, you can mention that too.Leadership doesnt need to be in a job to get the hiring managers attention! Taking a leadership role in a sports environment is impressive as well.Youre not going to mention specific accomplishments in your resume summary usually (you can do that later in your resume), but you can say things like proven leadership or natural leader, etc.2. Put your interests and passionsAre you passionate about startups and technology? Great, put that.Want to make a difference in the world, and focus your career on social impact? Mention that. This can include the grades you received, but also leadership positions you led, and clubs/groups you participated in.3. Put hard skillsIf youre proficient in any tools, technologies, etc you can include that in your resume summary. Dont list 20 things. Thats what your Skills section is for.But pi ck the three or four things that are most relevant for the job youre applying for.Coming up in this article, were going to look at two resume summary examples for people with no experience... and in the second example, youll see how this would look.4. Put soft skillsAre you great at analytical thinking? Do you love working as a part of a team? Are you great at multi-tasking and handling a fast-paced team environment? While this shouldnt be the main focus of your resume summary section, these can be worth mentioning. Its especially good to include soft skills if you see them mentioned on the job description. For example, if you see they mention wanting someone whos great at multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment, and you feel that describes you well, then your resume summary is the perfect place to include this.5. Put statements that will grab their interest and make them want to ask you questions! If you mention leadership theyll want to ask you more about your leadership experiences . Thats a good thing.Remember, whatever you put, theyll probably ask you about. So as you write your summary for your resume, try to think about what you want them to discuss with you, and what you want a chance to talk about. And try to tailor your resume to fit the companies youre applying to. If youre applying to large corporations dont start your summary by saying Startup enthusiast.Resume Summary Example for Students, Fresh Graduates and Entry-Level Job Seekers:In this section, Im going to share three examples of how to write a summary for your resume with no experience. You can use these resume summary examples as a student, entry-level job seeker, or any job search where you dont have experience:Resume Summary Example with No Experience #1:Enthusiastic, highly-motivated Economics student with proven leadership capabilities, who likes to take initiative and seek out new challenges. In this example above, youre showing that you completed your Economics degree and have an interest i n the subject, and youre mentioning leadership and making the reader want to learn more about this.Youre also making yourself sound ambitious and motivated at the end, which is always a good thing (Im referring to the part that says who likes to take initiative and seek out new challenges).Notice the format too. This is how I recommend phrasing it. Dont say I am a ___. Just start with the descriptive words. This is a simple yet effective resume summary example for students OR recent graduates.Resume Summary Example with No Experience #2:Computer Science graduate passionate about data engineering and machine learning. Highly-capable leader, having led multiple Senior class projects to completion. Proficient in a range of modern technologies including Python, Java and Scala. This is another good example of a resume summary if you have no experience that uses the steps earlier in this article. In this entry-level resume summary example, youre highlighting accomplishments and leadership as a student and youre also showing what youre passionate about doing.Saying youre passionate about data engineering is much better than just saying, Looking for a job in data engineering.Theyll know youre looking for jobs because you applied. Taking up space to say it is a bad use of this area of your resume, and is why I never recommend having a resume Objective section. The summary exists instead of an Objective and is much better. The example above also included some great programming keywords (Python, Java, Scala) to help get past any automated application systems and grab the hiring managers attention very quickly when they first look at your resume. If you work with any tools or technologies that have names like these, you can include it in your entry-level resume summary if youd like.Other examples of tools/technologies: Photoshop, MS Excel, etc.If you decide not to include these on your resume summary, make sure to include them elsewhere such as your Education or Skills section. Resume Summary Example with No Experience #3:4th year mathematics student passionate about statistics and data analysis. Proven project leader. Active member of Boston Universitys Mathematics Club. Speaker at 2018 New York Young Mathematicians Conference. This resume summary example for students shows how you can list accomplishments even if youve never formally worked before.Did you participate in any clubs at school? Have you led any class projects? These are impressive pieces you can add to your resume summary with no experience formally working. How to Write a Resume Summary with No Experience Quick RecapSkip buzzwords like hard-working and put real academic accomplishments instead, like projects you produced and tasks you ledInclude what youre interested and passionate about to show them why you are applying for this positionMention hard skills like Java Programming or Excel, especially if theyre listed on the job descriptionInclude soft skills as well like, excellent at multi-t asking, especially if you saw these keywords anywhere on the job descriptionInclude statements in your resume summary that will catch the employers interest and make them want to talk with you and ask you more. Remember the entire goal of your resume is to get invited to interview. So if you did anything unique like giving presentations, working in an internship, participating in a school club, etc., you can include this in your entry-level resume summary. If you follow the tips above youll have a great entry-level resume summary that will stand out and catch a recruiters or hiring managers attention so you can get more interviews. After you write your resume summary, here are two more articles that may be helpful when job searching with no experience:The best times of year to job searchHow to create a great elevator pitch for job hunting

The Sex and The City Effect
The Sex and The City Effect After a 3 month stint in the far west suburbs, Im all moved back into my fabulous Chicago apartment. The views from my apartment are awesome, my commute to work is about 10 minutes vs. 90 minutes, and my friends are close by again. Im glad to be back, but I can already feel the effects of how different city life is.Within a few months of being in the âburbs, there are already several new trendy bars and restaurants in my neighborhood since I left. Of course I feel the need to try these as soon as possible. These new venues also make me think how nice it would be to have some new outfits and shoes to wear to these new venues I temporarily forgot how expensive grocery shopping in the city is, how quickly your cash can go when taking cabs, and how fast your calendar fills up. There is always an event, a meeting, an old friend who is in town and something new to do. It seems that relaxing is something that needs to be scheduled, and enjoying the simple things (which for me are reading, cooking and working out) gets thrown out the window if you arent careful. It is so easy to live a lifestyle that is above and beyond your means, especially if your friends have larger incomes than you do. This is what I call The Sex and the City Effect. When you live in the city, its easy to get caught up in the glitz and the glam, the new restaurants, the new men, the new outfits, and forget why you came to the city in the first place: which is probably because of your career. Im hoping my 3 months in the suburbs will serve as a reality check and a benchmark for me when I start getting off course with my priorities. Im hoping I can just say no to overbooking myself and living too large for my goals. How have you felt The Sex and the City effect in your life or among your group of friends?

Baby Boomers and Beyond...Search Strategies for the Over 50 Job Seeker
Baby Boomers and Beyond...Search Strategies for the Over 50 Job Seeker According to an October 2006 AARP Survey, business executives and managers are aware of the labor market shifts that will occur as baby boomers approach traditional retirement age, but few have done anything proactive to minimize the potential impact this will have on their business. The over 50 candidate can improve their chances of landing a job by becoming knowledgeable of the coming labor shortage statistics and showing employers how they can support their businesss evolving needs. There are many positive perceptions attached to older workers including the belief by many employers that older workers are loyal, on time, rarely absent, committed to quality, and experienced in their fields. By focusing on success stories around these performance dimensions, the 50+ job seeker can prove their value add in a changing labor market. Baby boomers should also be cognizant of some negative perceptions regarding their generation including the belief by some hiring managers that older worker s are adverse to change, possess out of date job skills, and typically have difficulty reporting to a younger boss. Again, the 50+ candidate needs to have success stories around these dimensions to prove that these perceptions are incorrect relative to their candidacy. Stuck in the middle with....OK, I was gonna say you but that doesnt apply to this post. - When I Grow Up
Stuck in the middle with....OK, I was gonna say you but that doesnt apply to this post. - When I Grow Up I have a smart, smart husband. Hes the calm sea to my storm, and always helps me quiet my brain puts my worries/anxieties/stress to rest. It doesnt hurt that hes super cute very funny, too! But I digress.. We were talking this weekend about work, and our passions, and how I feel like there is just so much I want/need to do! Things that I dont have the time, or the energy, or the money for. The things, though, that I am doing are causing me worry/stress/anxiety because I feel like theres not an end in sight. I want to grow my business, I want to do a show, I want to call my friends, I want to have some alone time. And no matter how many business building activities I do (Twitter, anyone?), or how many times I speak to the Artistic Director of Opening Doors, or how many friends I catch-up with, or how many hours I spend reading the paper and drinking my coffee, theres just no end in sight. No wrap-up. No doneness. Is doneness a word? I dont think so, because my spell check is underlining it in red. But doneness expresses what I feel so Im keeping it. My husband listens to me ramble, and sees me getting discouraged, and says Michelle, you are one of the most driven people I know. You just dont say youre going to do something, start it, then walk away you finish it. But right now youre in the middle. Youre not just starting coaching, and youre certainly not done with it youre in the middle, right before becoming certified and being able to devote more time to your business. Your acting stuff was neither here nor there this year because you didnt have the time, so youre in a holding pattern there. Your day job didnt just start and youre not about to leave, so youre stuck somewhere in the middle of that timeline too. But once you graduate, and once you get on stage, and once you know that you can make your living at coaching itll be a whole new ballgame. OK, so in reality he might have said only the 1st 4 sentences of what I quoted above, but he might as well of said it all. All of those thoughts came into my head, and they gave me new energy to just keep going! I think I am someone whos had so many stops and starts, so many passions, so many friendships and so many day jobs Im excited by the starting, Im usually even excited for the ending, but its when Im stuck in the middle that I get the itchies. I think Im just going to keep on scratching.
