Here are 9 super valuable lessons school never taught me
Here are 9 super valuable lessons school never taught meHere are 9 super valuable lessons school never taught meLet me tell you a storyWhen I was in the 3rd grade, we had to write a paragraph about something we loved, and then draw a picture in the box above it.We were first asked to draw and write in pencil, and then once the teacher had checked our work, we were supposed to carefully go over each word in the paragraph with a black pen, creating the finished product. When I started going over the words with my black pen, I outlined the first word of the paragraph, and then the second, and then I thought it would be fun to outline the last word of my story, and then some words in the middlejust sort of outlining the letters I was drawn to next, leid following any sort of rigid path.My teacher walked over and said, Cole? Hows it coming?I held up my piece of paper to show her how far Id gottenI was very proud of my work. She scrunched her eyebrows, crossed her arms and asked, Why arent y ou going over the words in order?A bit confused by her question, I said, very honestly, Theyre all going to be colored in at the end. Why does it matter how I get there? She called home that night and told my parents I had a learning disability. My experience with formal education was, shall we say, less than impressive.I was a straight C student all the way up through high school. I was a horrible test-taker. I didnt do very well on my ACT. I was constantly asked to leave class because the questions I would ask were so rudimentary that my teachers thought I was mocking themwhen really (at least, most of the time) I just had trouble following the lesson. Not everyone learns the same way.And I believe a significant portion of my adolescence was wasted by a school system that tried to wedge me into a tiny circle on a Scranton sheet.Im bedrngnis dumb.Ive been playing Mozart and Beethoven on the piano since I was seven years old. Ive won writing contests and debate competitions. I am about to publish my first book. I just learn better by getting my hands dirtynot sitting in a fake-marble desk chair listening to a monotone teacher in front of a whiteboard. Now, Ill be the first to admit I definitely did not give school everything I hadI gave up on school at a very early age. Mostly because I felt like school gave up on me.School never asked, How do you learn? Instead, school told me how I should learnand when it didnt work, school called me Dumb.Well, here are 9 things school didnt teach me that I learned on my own1. There are no rulesThe people who enforce the rules (creatively speaking here) are the people who dont have the confidence or the belief that the world is an easel and everyone has a paintbrush.2. Titles are crippling, not The goalAll those kids that got straight As, went to the Ivy League school of their choice, got the fancy title at the fancy company They can keep it.Titles are crippling.Titles encourage you to relax, and let your title speak for youinst ead of your skill and knowledge earning you other peoples respect. But when push comes to shove, its the people who have gotten their hands dirty in the trenches you want on your team. Not the ones with a fancy title in front of their names.3. There is no 1 right way to do anythingThis is a massive disservice school teaches kidsthat there is a right way and a wrong way.False. There are a million ways. And the name of the game isnt to do it any one particular way. Its to understand which one works the best for YOU, and will allow you to maximize your strengths.4. HOW is mora important than WHATHOW you do something is far more important than WHAT you do.In every industry, there are those who do things with honor, integrity, discipline, passion, and heart, and there are those who do so with malicious intent, or a lack of sincerity, etc.Think about the people who respect or look up to. You look up to them because of HOW they approach what they do, not WHAT they do.5. Acceptance is overrat edRemember all those class projects you had to do?Remember all the times you were told to agree with your classmates for the sake of learning how to work well with others ?That cultivates a bad habit of suppressing your own unique voice and the great debates that spark truly meaningful ideas.Being accepted is overratedand the real world taught me that the hard way.6. Learning how to learn is whats importantReiterating the point here, school would be so much more beneficial if it taught students HOW to learnnot WHAT to learn. What good is memorizing chemistry equations if you dont fundamentally understand the process of learning? So many kids struggle as soon as they get out of school because they dont have anyone telling them anymore, Here, learn this next. They lack directionbecause they were never taught the art of learning.7. Your passion is not a waste of timeSchool (and society at large) wants us to believe that there are acceptable hobbies and hobbies that are a waste of time. It s the reason the first departments to go are always art or music related. But what you love is NEVER a waste of time. You will always learn more from an interest pulled at from your heart than a pursuit dangled in front of your head.8. Success does not have one definitionSchool likes to measure thingsusually in the form of a letter grade beside each subject of study. It inherently defines success as better or higher or more. But thats just not true. Success could mean honest expression, or it could mean presence, or it could mean facing a challenge, failing, and learning a valuable lesson.Success comes in many different forms. Its not always about getting the A.9. Its OK to be differentAnd finally, the most important one of them all Who you are is already good enough.School has this funny way of making kids that are different feel extra-different, extra-weird, extra-not-normal. But you know what? Get out into the real world, and the most valuable thing you could possibly have is to be different.Everybody wants to stand out. Everybody wants something thats going to set them apart. You have what everybody wants Remember that. This article originally appeared on Inc Magazine.

It can also be described as the production andmanagementof farm animals. From Alabama to Wyoming, and beyond, there is a good selection of colleges and universities that are currently offering a degree program in the field of animal science. You literary can study to become an animal scientist just about anywhere in the United State. A degree in animal science can also be used as a stepping stone to a variety of graduate-level paths of study including veterinary medicine. For those not interested specifically in animal science degrees, you might want to explore the other animal-related degrees offered by these schools- many offer such animal-related options as equine science, veterinary technology, zoology, wildlife biology, and marine science. Thats bec ause the facilities used by a department of animal science to house animals are expensive and the facilities are rarely reserved for the exclusive use of the animal science programs students. Choose a School Wisely When choosing a school, be sure to evaluate each schools attributes carefully. Your goal should be to find a program that offers a combination of hands-on practical experience as well as challenging coursework in the classroom. Animal science majors always benefit from the opportunity to put their classroom knowledge to good use in the field. It doesnt matter if that practical experience consists of working with a variety of companion animal and livestock species as part of lab work or finding practical campus employment. Also be sure that the school offers the opportunity to work with the type of animals you are most interested whether they be horses, beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, goats, poultry, etc. While this list focuses on institutions that offer four-year Bachelors of Science degree programs, there are also many other programs at junior colleges that offer two-year Associates degrees that can later be applied towards completion of a 4-year degree. 11 Professional Development Tips From Great Bosses -The Muse
11 Professional Development Tips From Great Bosses -The Muse11 Professional Development Tips From Great BossesSome bosses really stick in your memory. Often, its two kinds that leave the fruchtwein indelible marks the horrible bosses and the amazing ones. The former teach you what kind of boss you want to actively avoid going forward (and the kind you never want to become yourself). The latter, on the otzu sich hand, might become your mentors. But even if thats leid the case, tzu siches a good chance youve still carried the lessons you learned from them to your next job and every one after that. We asked 11 people to highlight lessons learned from their favorite managers. No matter what kind of boss you have right now, you can apply these valuable pieces of advice in your own career.1. Own Your WorkEarly in Alisha Chochas marketing career, zu sich boss asked her to redesign the monthly email newsletter. She told her to figure it out and come to her if she got stuck. I almost died. Ho w could my manager really give me an assignment that vague? she recalls. She knew only very basic HTML at the time, but she did her research and came up with a new template that increased both clicks and sales. If she told me how to do it, I would rely on her for every assignment, expecting a 1-2-3 step guide. She welches training me to be independent, self-motivated, and take pride in my work, Chocha says. She ended up co-founding her current company, Your Marketing People, with that very same boss. Weve discovered some incredible talent who rise to the occasion, she says. And were training a gruppe to be true go-getters.2. Remember the GoalWhen Muse sales development representative Megan Cull welches working as a program director, she was also frequently on the receiving end of customer complaints. There was one customer in particular who binnenseemed to have an endless supply. She really did not like me, says Cull, but seemed to love her boss when he got involved. Cull asked her manager to meet to learn how he turned a negative customer into a positive one. He told me that sometimes its less about proving youre right, and more about how you make someone feel, she explains. He taught her to always remember what the ultimate goal is. So the next time she had a complaint- which she did- then I focused on making her feel understood because my goal was to have a happy customer, rather than discounting her claims. As a reminder, she printed out WHAT IS THE GOAL?? and hung it over her computer. 3. Listen MoreIn her first post-MBA job, Paige Arnof-Fenn was a bit of a handful, she admits. I was often impatient, brash, frustrated, outspoken, and did not like being at the bottom of the totem pole. But then she got a new boss. She was a quiet leader who never tried to talk over people but when she made a comment everyone listened, explains Arnof-Fenn, now the founder and CEO of global branding and marketing firm Mavens Moguls. I saw how effective her style was and how people reacted to her and decided I wanted to be smart like her. I made a very conscious effort to listen more and only make comments when I had something big to say, she adds. When I left that job I just abfluged being that way from the start in meetings and people never knew that I was more of a pop off before.4. Ask for What You WantToday, Antonella Pisani is the founder of the startup FACT goods and the ecommerce and digital marketing firm Eyeful Media. But two decades ago, she was working on creating partnerships at a company called WebSideStory. While reviewing business development contracts with the CMO, he used the phrase No asky, no getty It may sound simple, but Pisani found it helpful in that role and every job shes held since (and has passed it on as she became the boss). This applies to everything from asking for additional discounts when buying advertising, to negotiating a job offer, she explains. And its catchy enough to stick with people.5. Focus on the WhyMuse edit or Alyse Kalish learned from her favorite boss to focus on the why. When I was handed a project, she always did her best to explain the why behind it- this made me feel like the work I was doing was valuable, whether for my personal growth or for our team, Kalish says. When I launched a project or suggested an idea, she encouraged me to think about why it would be worth pursuing, what goal it was tied to, and why it would help our team. This lesson has helped Kalish prioritize, stay motivated, and be transparent in her own projects. If I make a major revision on an article, if I push back a meeting, if I decide not to continue a project, she explains, I want people to know why so they can also make smarter decisions going forward.6. Keep Things Moving and DelegateNothing will ever be perfect. You also cant do everything yourself. Theo Lee, co-founder and CEO of KPOP Foods, learned both of these lessons when he was the manager of finance at a fintech startup reporting directly to his CEO.Startups are constantly strapped for resources, such as money and manpower, but maybe one of the most important is time, Lee says. Its more important to get things moving than making things absolutely perfect.Part of this, he adds, is learning how to delegate. In the early days, Lee would often start off projects, such as designing the website and creating an Instagram account. But he realized he couldnt keep his hand in every project, remembered his former bosss example, and passed over various components to his team. 7. Be CuriousBrian Sowards, Enterprise Account Executive at The Muse, previously founded and ran his own startup, USEED, a crowdfunding platform for higher education. The chairman of his board taught him, by example, how important it is to be curious. I never met someone who genuinely asked so many questions about so many things, even when I knew he was tired or stressed, Sowards says. I found its helped my career a ton because people really enjoy when you are cur ious about them and what they do. It actually makes it easier to deal with difficult situations because curiosity is like a smile, its hard to feel anxious when youre doing it8. Always Carry a NotebookJessica Peters, Business Operations Project Manager at The Muse, recently spoke to one of The Muses founders in passing. Their spontaneous conversation was a spitfire of ideas and questions to clarify. Luckily, Peters had a notebook on her, and she wrote everything down. Its one of several lessons she learned while working for the chief marketing officer and CEO at Overstock. Peters was one of two executive assistants who worked with the CEO. He was excited to see she brought a notebook everywhere, and, well, not so excited to see that her counterpart didnt. Needless to say, Peters went on to always carry something she can use to jot down notes.9. Make Yourself IndispensableNiyati Desai attributes her professional growth at least in part to a lesson she learned from one of her first bo sses If your boss doesnt miss you when youre not around, you arent doing your job well and you wont find success. She learned to anticipate her bosss needs and questions- basically, to make herself indispensable. I saw my boss do this daily for her boss, Desai says. To this day as a PR manager for the software company PlanGrid, Desai makes sure shes chasing down missing information or items she knows her boss needs to deliver on a particular project, and offers to handle tasks on her bosss plate. In a nutshell, if my boss doesnt see my value, he or she is also not likely to advocate for me behind closed doors, and I probably wont see that promotion or new project assignment I really want. 10. Build a Solid NetworkFor several years, Dave Yonkman worked as the director of communications for then-U.S. Representative Pete Hoekstra. One of the lessons that stuck was to create a solid network. Yonkman, now founder and president of DYS Media, made a habit of collecting hundreds of business cards and writing notes on the backs about the people hed met and their interests- a practice he continues to this day. 11. Do Small Tasks ImmediatelyAnytime Jennifer McDermotts about to add something to her to-do list, she asks herself, Or could I just do it now?Its a lesson McDermotts boss emphasized when she was part of a PR team at The Travel Corporation. She hated to see items on there that potentially made me look busier, but only took a few minutes to complete, says McDermott, who now heads communications for the personal finance website finder. The change of habit became so deeply ingrained that its now part of her daily routine. I start my day with a to-do list and while I have my morning tea, work through and do anything that can be done immediately such as a quick email reply, making an edit to a webpage, or making a booking, she says. You may not have a role model in your professional life right now, but that doesnt mean you cant adopt some of these lessons. Theyll certa inly help you grow, and they might lead you to a new opportunity- and your own great boss.

Bright Light from the Tiny
Bright Light from the Tiny Bright Light from the Tiny However high-tech the lenses on our phones and the solar cells on our roofs, they tend to collect light the old fashioned way. That is, thanks to their more or less natural optical properties, much of the light bouncing around them goes unharnessed. The materials are just too macro to make use of all the light that hits them.At the micron scale, though, optics get weird. And this weirdness has allowed researchers at the University of Wisconsin to create a resonator that can make an object appear some 10,000 times brighter. Many of the engineering issues for improving light energy and photo detector efficiency come down to how well you can concentrate light, says Zongfu Yu, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the university, who runs the lab.A conventional magnifying lens, for instance, can focus enough light to burn a leaf. We want to go well beyond that, says Yu.The trick to vastly superior light collection is f ound in the optical cross section of Yus material. If you have a basketball, the optical cross section is basically the size of the basketball, explains Yu. At the micron scale things arent so simple. You could have a one micron object but have a few micron-sized optical cross section. In other words, the shadow created can be much larger than its physical size. And Yu and his colleagues have managed to increase that dramatically.Prof. Zongfu Yu (left) specializes in controlling the behavior of light at a small scale. Image University of WisconsinTo maximize the effect, Yus team turned to the counterintuitive world of metameterials. behauptung materials refract light in unnatural ways. Most materials have a refraction index greater than one, meaning they refract light more than air (which has a refraction index of one). Water, for instance, has a refraction index of 1.3, while a diamonds number is 2.4. But the material that Yu and his colleagues have devised has a refraction index o f 0.1. In short, it bends light the wrong way, by a lot. The result produces an optical cross section that is ten times an objects size, meaning that the perceived size of an object ends up being ten times bigger than its physical size.Other metamaterials with low refraction indices have been used in various kinds of invisibility cloaks. This is kind of the opposite of cloaking, Yu says. Cloaking wants to make an object look tiny, tiny small even though its size is large. We want a tiny, tiny small object to look very large. The impact of the research is likely to look very large, too. Solar cells will be able to get much closer to the theoretical limit of efficiency. And camera lenses will do much better in minimal light. Currently, lenses throw away a third of the light that hits them. Well have an RGB filter that can capture light from an area larger than its physical size, says Yu. The R, G, and B pixels will be able to steal light from their neighbors so that you can fully use t he light that gets to your camera lens. The only hold up at the moment is all the engineering work that needs to be done to make it a reality. Essentially, this is in the lab and needs quite a bit of development before it will be seen in a product. It should work fundamentally. We think that there are only practical engineering issues that need to be done, but in terms of fundamental physical laws, they allow us to do this.As Yu puts it, with an inverse refraction of the old saw Until you see it in your iPhone cameras, it hasnt happened yet.Michael Abrams is an independent writer.Learn more about energy solutions for a sustainable future at ASME Power Energy 2016.
